TOP-UP INSURANCE
About the plan
Top-up insurance allows clients to obtain insurance coverage to complete a contract that they have with another insurer.
It is the perfect solution for clients who hold coverage with a group plan or a credit card that does not cover the entire duration of their trip.
Included coverage
Coverage | Maximum coverage per person | |
---|---|---|
Emergency Medical Care |
$5,000,000 (optional deductible) |
Flight Delay Service is included for the return flights.
Blue Cross travel assistance is also included with the plan.
Sales rules and other important information
Top-up insurance IS NOT a contract extension.
If your clients hold a Blue Cross Single-Trip or Multi-Trip Annual plan and need additional days of coverage, you must sell a contract extension. You can find more information about contract extensions here.
Keep in mind that:
- Your clients must purchase Top-up insurance BEFORE leaving their province of residence. Clients holding a contract with a member of the Canadian Association of Blue Cross Plans can purchase Top-Up insurance after departure but before the initial coverage’s termination date.
- Your clients must confirm with their first insurer whether they allow top-up with a different insurer.
- Your client is responsible for knowing what their initial coverage includes, and the exact number of days covered by the first insurer.
- The stability period is calculated from the departure date of the client, not from the beginning of the Blue Cross coverage
- A health condition can be covered by one insurer and excluded by the other.
- The exclusions under the Blue Cross contract only apply during the period your clients are covered by Blue Cross.
Top-Up example
Your client has access to 60-day travel insurance coverage through their group insurance plan with insurer XYZ. They plan to spend 100 days abroad.
Solution:
60 days with insurer XYZ + 40 days with Blue Cross Top-up insurance = 100 days of coverage.
If your client decides to extend their stay, then you will need to extend the Top-Up plan.
How to sell the plan
You can sell this by answering yes to the question about Top-up Insurance at the “Trip” stage. You will need to provide the number of days covered by the first insurer and its type.
